{"id":1921,"date":"2024-11-12T11:32:59","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T01:32:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fasttrainingaustralia.com.au\/?post_type=resources&#038;p=1921"},"modified":"2024-12-21T14:58:20","modified_gmt":"2024-12-21T04:58:20","slug":"severe-bleeding-first-aid","status":"publish","type":"resources","link":"https:\/\/fasttrainingaustralia.com.au\/resources\/severe-bleeding-first-aid\/","title":{"rendered":"Severe Bleeding First Aid"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Severe Bleeding First Aid\u00a0Management: Important First Aid Steps for managing and controlling Severe Bleeding<\/h2>\n<p>Bleeding should be managed as severe and life-threatening if it cannot be controlled by firm, direct and continuous pressure, and\/or there are signs of shock.\u00a0 Follow these steps for severe bleeding first aid management.<\/p>\n<p>If it is obvious that severe and life-threatening bleeding is present, controlling bleeding before the Airway and Breathing can be lifesaving. Send for help early by calling triple zero (000) for an ambulance.<\/p>\n<h3>Signs &amp; Symptoms:<\/h3>\n<h4><strong>As well as the obvious sign of blood coming from a wound, signs and symptoms of severe bleeding include:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>weak, rapid pulse<\/li>\n<li>pale, cool, moist skin<\/li>\n<li>pallor, sweating rapid, gasping breathing<\/li>\n<li>restlessness<\/li>\n<li>nausea<\/li>\n<li>thirst<\/li>\n<li>faintness, dizziness or confusion<\/li>\n<li>loss of consciousness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Examples of life threatening and severe bleeding include the following situations:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>an amputated or partially amputated limb above the wrist or ankle<\/li>\n<li>shark attack, propeller cuts<\/li>\n<li>or similar major trauma to any part of the body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What to do &#8211; Severe Bleeding First Aid:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Follow DRSABCD.<\/li>\n<li>Apply gloves if available. Help the patient to lie down. Remove or cut the patient\u2019s clothing to expose the wound.<\/li>\n<li>Apply firm, direct and continuous pressure on the bleeding wound initially with your hands until the bleeding stops. The patient or a bystander can do this.<\/li>\n<li>When available, apply a pad or dressing in or directly over the wound and apply firm, direct and continuous pressure until the bleeding stops. If an object is embedded in or protruding from a wound, apply pressure on either side of the wound and place pads around the object before bandaging.<\/li>\n<li>Once bleeding is controlled secure the pad by bandaging firmly, ensuring the pad remains directly over the wound. Observe for any further bleeding.<\/li>\n<li>Continue to check the patient\u2019s vital signs (consciousness, breathing and pulse) and look for recurrence of bleeding. Do not give the patient anything to eat or drink.<\/li>\n<li>If the bleeding is not controlled and: The bleeding is on a limb, apply an arterial tourniquet (if available) and tightened until the bleeding stops. Advise the patient that this will cause pain. The bleeding is not on a limb, remove existing dressings and apply a hemostatic dressing (if available) in or directly over the wound and apply firm, direct and continuous pressure until the bleeding stops.<\/li>\n<li>Call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In a medical emergency call Triple Zero (000).
